20 April Activities for the Primary Classroom (Facebook Cover)

A new year brings fresh energy to the classroom—new goals, new ideas, and new opportunities for our students to grow. January is one of my favorite times to reflect, reset, and plan engaging activities that build on everything my students have already learned.

I have 10 engaging January activities to share with you—but before we jump in, let’s talk about you for a sec. If your lesson planning routine means hours of searching and prepping, it’s time for a simpler solution. Education to the Core Premium is an unlimited resources membership for K–3 teachers that puts everything you need in one place, saving you time not just in January, but all year long.

1. January Interactive Daily Calendar

A daily interactive calendar is a fun, low-prep way to build curiosity and background knowledge in your classroom. Each day highlights a national or international celebration and links to a kid-friendly video or read-aloud that shares a little information about why the day is special—giving students something engaging to look forward to each morning.

2. Setting Goals for the New Year

A new year goal-setting activity helps primary students reflect, dream big, and feel proud of what they’re working toward. With simple prompts, kid-friendly language, and visuals, students can set meaningful goals they actually understand—whether it’s becoming a stronger reader, being a kinder classmate, or trying their best each day.

3. Winter Break Reflection Selfie

Prep for the first day back from winter break with this winter break selfie—a fun, low-pressure way for students to share what they did while they were away. Instead of putting kids on the spot, this engaging activity lets them draw, write, and reflect at their own pace, making it perfect for primary learners.

4. Daily Digital Slides

January is the perfect time to refresh your classroom routines, and daily slides make staying organized easier than ever. With built-in options for morning meeting, centers, transitions, and wrap-up, you can keep your day running smoothly from start to finish. Best of all, the slides are fully editable—just plug in your schedule and routines once, and enjoy a calm, consistent flow every morning and afternoon.

5. Refreshing Listening Ears

After winter break, Listen and Color activities are a simple, engaging way to refresh listening ears and refocus attention. Students practice following directions while staying actively involved, making it the perfect low-pressure reset after winter break.

6. Martin Luther King Jr. Activities

Martin Luther King Jr. activities give primary students a meaningful way to learn about his life and legacy through age-appropriate lessons. With engaging writing prompts, simple timelines, and fluency passages, students can build comprehension while reflecting on kindness, fairness, and making a difference—helping them connect history to their own lives.

7. Winter Read Alouds

Winter read-alouds like The Mitten and Snowmen at Night are a cozy way to re-engage students after break while building comprehension skills. Pairing these favorites with a simple follow-up activity—such as a quick write or craft helps your students deepen their understanding and extend learning beyond the story.

8. I Spy Winter Words

An I Spy activity with decodable winter words is a fun, hands-on way to strengthen phonics skills while keeping students engaged. As students search for and read each word, they practice decoding in a meaningful, low-pressure way that feels like a game. It’s the perfect January activity for reinforcing phonics, building confidence, and adding a little winter-themed fun to your literacy block.

9. Make Your Own Snowflakes

January is the perfect time to bring a little winter magic into your classroom with hands-on activities like creating borax snowflakes. This simple science project gives students a chance to explore, observe, and create while staying engaged during the colder months.

10. Fun with Fake Snow

If you’re looking for another easy, classroom-friendly winter experiment, making snow with baking soda and conditioner is a must-try. This quick sensory activity lets students mix, explore, and observe as everyday materials transform into soft, fluffy “snow,” adding even more seasonal fun to your January science routines.
