Presidents' Day Activities for Primary Students

Presidents' Day Activity 1. If I Were President... Writing

This writing activity brings out your students' creative genius. They get to share with you all of the amazing things they would do as President of the United States. Perfect for a bulletin board display, you may have sentences such as "I would give everybody free pizza.” or “I would plant trees everywhere and take care of the Earth.”

2. Fact or Opinion

Can your students identify statements as facts or opinions? This practice activity allows them to showcase that skill by reading a variety of sentences and deciding whether each one is a fact or an opinion. Use this around Presidents' Day, as all of the statements have to do with George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, or just being president.

Presidents' Day Activity 3. QR Codes and Comprehension Questions

Perfect for a center all week, use QR Code Read Alouds about the presidents, voting, and leading our government as a Presidents' Day activity. Your students scan the code with their tablet, read and/or listen to the story read aloud, then respond to some questions about the book. With 8 codes on the page, this center could be used for two weeks in February, saving you time on center activity planning and prep.

4. Presidents' Day Mini-Book

What is Presidents' Day? Your students can practice reading simple text. They can read with a partner, or independently in a center. Afterward, work on the comprehension questions, or respond to the writing prompt. Once they've read the book in class, they can take it home and share it with their families.

Presidents’ Day lessons are part of our students' development. They provide an overall understanding of the office of the presidency and why it’s so important. These activities can lay the groundwork for their active involvement as citizens down the road. Making them more inclined to see voting as a civic duty and an important part of their role as Americans.
