Distance learning has become the new method of teaching for now. So… We now have an awesome set of digital reading comprehension activities! As an added bonus, we have also included FUN at home ideas you can do with your children and students to practice comprehension strategies over the summer and into the school year.

Activity #1: Main Idea and Key Details
FUN IDEA
Grab 4-5 objects that all belong in the same category (ex. banana, orange, apple, strawberries – fruit). Have your child look at the objects and tell you what the main idea is for the group. Extend the activity by asking them if they can add another item that goes along with the main idea. Possibly add an item that doesn’t belong and ask them which item they could remove from the group.
Activity #2: Story Elements
FUN IDEA
Grab a die and play “Roll and Retell”. Your child will roll the die and answer a question based on the number rolled.
- Who was/were the character(s) in the story? Did you have a favorite one?
- Where and When did this story take place?
- Tell me an event that happened in the beginning, middle, and end of the story?
- Was there a problem in the story?
- What was the solution to the problem in the story?
- What was your favorite part of the story?
Activity #3: Fluency
FUN IDEA
There is no better way to practice fluency than to READ, READ, READ! We have some fun reading ideas for your children to practice. Make reading books enjoyable by reading in a variety of places. Use our “Read It Here and There” checklist to get your kiddos excited about reading. (access code ETTC2020)
For the LEGO lovers in your home, use them as an incentive to read. Every time your child reads a book or a set amount of minutes, they earn a LEGO or two to build a creation. I know that my son loves this!
Activity #4: Compare and Contrast
FUN IDEA
Choose two items that have similarities and differences between them. (ex. banana and lemon) Ask your child if they can tell you something that is the SAME between the objects and then something that is DIFFERENT. Can they write down those similarities and differences?
A simpler activity is to choose one object (banana). Can your child find another object that is similar (type of fruit) and an object that is different (toy)?
Activities #5 and #6: Text Features
FUN IDEA
Create a game of “Text Features BINGO” with your child. Fold a piece of paper into 9 squares and hand your child sticky notes, or square pieces of colored paper. In the 9 squares, randomly write the words: Glossary, Caption, Table of Contents, Diagram, Subheading, Index, Vocabulary Term, Image, Graph/Map. As your child finds one of these text features (non-fiction texts work best), they cover up it up with their sticky note or square paper. Try to get BINGO, 4 corners, black out, etc.
These digital reading comprehension activities are a MUST for any classroom. Whether we are distance learning again this next year, or back in our classrooms, they can be incorporated into your literacy time. Assign in google classroom remotely from home, or have students work on iPads in small group literacy centers. Either way, you can easily track their responses and progress on these important comprehension skills.
