So, it is happening again! ? Some of us just finished up teaching six weeks of ESY, and boom, August is approaching so fast! Do you all feel this angst like I do? I love my class, co-workers, kiddos, and school, but gee whiz, do we have to start the fall session in August? If you are anything like me, you are sitting there thinking of all of the reasons why school shouldn’t start back so early. Here is my take on the 22 Reasons Why School Shouldn’t Start in August. Maybe you will find #4, #14, and #17 so relatable to your own situation!
Top 5 Reasons School Shouldn’t Start in August
1. I haven’t finished every episode on my Netflix Series. Ok, so I am not really a Netflix girl, but I haven’t seen one movie all summer. However, my co-workers constantly post about the Netflix shows they are watching. Do you have a few favorites? Have you had the chance to watch all of the episodes? I didn’t think so!
2. I have more books on my reading list. When my co-workers ask me if I’ve read any good books this summer:
3. My honey-do-list, I still need to start. Ok, so in all honesty, I don’t even have a honey. But with school starting in August, when will I find time to get one and give them the list?
4. I still need to start my to-do list. Another summer goes by with an unpainted fence, a broken toilet, a broken handle on the kitchen drawer . . .Do you all have a list of unfinished projects that you are too tired to do during the school year, so you promise yourself this summer you will get them all done?
5. The sun is shining, and the weather is warm. Well, I live in a state that gets all four seasons, and I have yet to enjoy this one! There should be a rule that school is perfect on rainy, cloudy, and gloomy days only. I haven’t been to the pool. Or the vineyard. Or, the lake. Please, let’s not start school yet!

7. Complete Summer Bucket List. Have you crossed off all of the fun things that you wanted to do this summer? Me either! No checks in any boxes for me!
8. My mind is occupied with things other than Professional Development. Four days of professional development during our upcoming Institute Days. Zero days of prepping my classroom. What? How do they expect us to focus when my thoughts are on the sunshine, my to-do list, my classroom prep list, anything, and everything but professional development.
9. My mind is too occupied with Professional Development. Ok, this one is a lie. I haven’t had time to do any additional professional development. Well, except one. I love Education to the Core’s new podcast: Where The Primary Things Are!!!!
10. I have some TikTok people that I follow that are not school-appropriate. My name is Suzy, and I am a TikTok addict. Most of the TikTokers I follow are teachers, but there is a little adult humor in the mix every once in a while! Click the link so that you can watch some great tips from some excellent teachers!
These Concerns Are Real
11. Target doesn’t have all THE THINGS yet! After all of these years, I am still like a kid in a candy store when it comes to new things for my classroom! How dare they start school when my Target keeps running out of THE THINGS before I can get there!
12. I haven’t recovered yet from last year. 2020-2021 was tough! Have we recovered from the trauma of it all? Let’s just take a break! Through August. At least.
13. I haven’t gotten my summer tan just right. Tan lines everywhere! Except for my thighs, chest, and stomach, which all have zero tans!
14. I’m not ready for real clothes. No pants, please! Real reason school shouldn’t start in August for many!
15. My class isn’t ready because I haven’t even started working on it yet. August should be a whole month of taking time to get your class just right if you choose. Or a month to do everything else until the 30th! At which time, we will get our classes ready.
I’m Not Too Proud to Beg
16. The besties and I still have plans. Outside of teaching this summer, I have not seen my besties at all. I miss them. We still have all of the things to do that we said would be fun; no kids type of fun! At the beach type of fun!
17. My pets have grown quite accustomed to sleeping in with me, and I wouldn’t wish to upset their schedule yet. Plus, who will tell them how great they are as pets if I am not there? School shouldn’t start in August!
18. No beach, lake, or mountain vacation yet. I have not even done a stay-cation yet! Let me take a vacation all of August!
